AMA Superbike: Double Win for Young

By Cycle CanadaPosted on

Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Blake Young moved to third overall in the 2010 AMA Superbike Championship standings after winning both races during Round 3 at Road Atlanta this past weekend.

Team Graves Yamaha rider Josh Hayes crossed the finish line first in race 1 on Saturday, but Young took top spot on the podium after race officials penalized Hayes (dropping him to sixth) for not completing his ride-through penalty after jumping the start in the red flag-interrupted race. Young’s teammate Tommy Hayden joined him on the podium to celebrate his first Superbike win, while National Guard Jordan Suzuki rider Jake Zemke took third.

Race two on Sunday saw Young lead all 20 laps after starting from the pole position, with Hayes remaining within striking distance throughout and missing top spot by just  0.136 of a second. Hayden was a distant third and Zemke fourth.

Canadian Brett McCormick, riding the Jordan Suzuki #23 bike in place of the injured Aaron Yates, was DNF for both races; crashing on Saturday and leaving with mechanical problems on Sunday.

Jake Zemke stays in the points lead with 145, four more than Tommy Hayden, while Young has 130.

Round 4 of AMA Pro American Superbike is at Infineon Raceway in California May 14-16.
