Renowned Italian motorcycle designer Massimo Tamburini passed away on the weekend at the age of 70. He succumbed to lung cancer after being diagnosed in November 2013.

Tamburini’s first creation was a revised 1971 MV Agusta 750 Sport with a frame he welded himself. He was one of three founders of Bimota, where he worked for 11 years. After a brief stint working in MotoGP, he then joined Claudio Castiglioni’s Cagiva Group (then owners of MV Agusta and Ducati). Tamburini’s designs included the Ducati Paso, and MV Agusta’s F4 and F3. However, he will forever be remembered as the designer of the iconic Ducati 916.
