Moto Canada Deeply Concerned With U.S. Ban On Certain Canadian Motorcycles

By: Published on 10 September 2026

Moto Canada is deeply concerned by the United States’ decision to prohibit imports of certain Canadian-origin motorcycles exceeding 800 cc. An outright import ban on these products has the potential to harm manufacturers, workers, dealers and consumers on both sides of the border without resolving the underlying trade dispute.

The prohibition was announced through a Presidential Proclamation signed September 8 and is scheduled to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on September 29, 2026. For covered Canadian-origin motorcycles classified under HTSUS 8711.50.00, the measure replaces the existing 50% tariff with an outright import ban.

The measure depends on the vehicle’s customs origin, tariff classification and engine displacement. The decision has the potential to create further uncertainty for Canadian manufacturers and their employees, as well as U.S. distributors, dealers and consumers who rely on Canadian-built products.

Canada and the United States share a highly integrated powersports market supported by cross-border manufacturing, suppliers, distribution networks and hundreds of local dealerships. Restricting this trade has the potential to reduce consumer choice, disrupt established supply chains and impose costs on businesses and communities in both countries.

Moto Canada urges both the Canadian and U.S. governments to remove motorcycles and related powersports products from retaliatory trade measures and return to the negotiating table to reach a resolution that protects workers, businesses, dealers and riders on both sides of the border.
