Road racing star Michael Dunlop has been named the Irish motorcyclist of the year for 2014.

The 25-year-old Ulsterman narrowly beat out World Superbike rider Jonathan Rea in the public vote for the coveted Joey Dunlop trophy. Michael joins his father Robert and uncle Joey as Dunlops who’ve won the award, Robert having won twice and Joey eight times.

“It’s an honour to get this trophy,” Michael said. “I’ve been surrounded by very good sponsors and supporters for years now. If it wasn’t for those boys I’d never have done the things I have.”

Michael won four races at last year’s Isle of Man TT – the second successive year he’d done so. He’s the first rider ever to win eight TTs in two years.
