Rabat clinches Moto2 title

Tito Rabat (Marc VDS Racing) finished third in Sunday’s Moto2 race at Sepang, Malaysia, which was good enough to secure top spot in the 2014 Moto2 championship.

Rabat was on pole, had a good start and led early, but dropped to third when Maverick Vinales (Paginas Amarillas HP) and Mika Kallio (Marc VDS Racing) went through with 10 laps remaining. Vinales would go on to win by 2.694 seconds over Kallio, with Rabat crossing the line 2.5 seconds clear of fourth-place finisher Johann Zarco (AirAsia Caterham).

“I am so, so happy,” Rabat said. “In the race today I pushed hard at the start, but at the end I decided to just manage the gap back to the riders behind me, to ensure a podium finish. It has not sunk in yet that I am World Champion, so I have no words, but thank you to the team because they pushed me every day. I want to dedicate this World Championship to my mum, because her memory motivates me to be the best I can every single day.”

Rabat will remain with Marc VDS Racing to defend his Moto2 title in 2015.
