WSBK: Rae and Biaggi Share Spoils at Brno

By Cycle CanadaPosted on

Hannspree Ten Kate Honda rider Jonathan Rea and championship leader Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia) traded wins yesterday during round 9 of the 2010 World Superbike Championship at Brno in the Czech Republic.

After dispensing with Biaggi and polesitter Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha Sterilgarda) on the first lap of race one, Rea opened up a 2.5 second gap and held it until the checkered flag for his third win of the season. Biaggi managed to pass Crutchlow in the closing laps to take second.

Attempting a repeat performance in race two, Rae held the lead for the opening six laps as he, Biaggi and BMW factory rider Ruben Xaus pulled away from the rest of the pack. But Biaggi hit the front on lap seven and Rea, finding no answer, settled comfortably for second place. Xerox Ducati’s Michel Fabrizio took third, after a crash on lap 15 of 20 denied Xaus his first podium finish of the season.

With his 45 point haul this weekend Biaggi stretches his lead in the overall standings to 68 points ahead of second placed Leon Haslam (Alstare Suzuki) who only managed eighth and tenth place finishes at Brno.  Rea now moves back into third place, 81 points shy of Haslam at 203.
