Aleix Espargaro takes first Grand Prix pole

NGM Forward Racing’s Aleix Espargaro claimed his first ever MotoGP pole position today for the Iveco Daily TT Assen. Although he set the fastest time in the final qualifying session, the weather played a big factor in the result.

Espargaro’s time of 1:38.789 was more than five seconds slower than the pace during Free Practice Four, though it was good enough for pole in a qualifying session affected by heavy rain. Riders became bunched up at the start of the Q2 session when weather looked to be worsening. Espargaro hung back, and was able to get a clearer run than many other riders. Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa complete the front row.
