Ducati has come out with a safety feature for its Multistrada do-everything bike that looks both effective and comfortable. The Italian motorcycle manufacturer has teamed up with Dainese, a maker of protective motorcycle clothing, to tie an airbag-equipped jacket to the electronics of the Multistrada.
The system uses sensors in the Multistrada’s electronics to analyze the motorcycle’s movement, and electronically trigger the airbags inside the Dainese D-Air jacket. According to Ducati UK, the system can begin inflation of the airbags in 45 milliseconds upon sensing a crash.
The motorcycle’s electronic system is integrated wirelessly with the jacket, so no plugging in is necessary.
Airbags are not unknown in motorcycles, but are not common. Honda’s Gold Wing has airbags in one version of the touring bike, but the Ducati-Dainese partnership is unusual in that the airbags are inside the jacket.
The system will be offered in Europe in May. There’s no word on when or if it will come to Canada.
